Some things never really change that much
Perhaps one of the few things that does not change that much with the passing of time is the daily routine and tradition of summer camp. We have dug up quite a few old photos from the Bob Smith era — 1947 to 1979 — as an illustration. Read the entire report, as I have surprises for you towards the end.
The idea is to teach a boy to be an independent fisherman…
Not a lot of change here, although I think the building in the background is where the front corner of our Dining Room is today.
Golf clinics are about the same…
except, of course, that we require a collared shirt!
Indeed, archery counselors are johnny-on-the-spot today…
just as way back then. That is the Freedom Field outfield fence at right, so they even had archery in the same place as we did for years.
Of course, they had a terrific waterfront area…
and, so do we, even with an occasional cheap bit taking place during general swim.
Bleachers are always a greet hang out place…
although back in those days, uniforms were more standard attire.
No doubt but that old-timers told many more stories in the old days…
and, they even had horseback riding.
Nonetheless, boys still pay close attention to their counselors and everyone gets along just swell.
We teach row boating today… and now for the surprises…
and so did they. However the “they” in this photo was old Camp Norway where my brother Billy takes me for a row boat ride in 1953 or 1954!
Kingswood has nature and crafts clinics …
and so did Norway, with Bobby Wiff holding the leash in this 1952 photo.
That is Bob on the foul line as a senior camper in about 1960…
and Mr. Wiff running the rifle range as an 18 year old first time counselor in 1965.
Oh, and there is the old Norway waterfront. Notice any similarities? Things do not change that much at camp!
